Beer and Comic

And just when you thought life could not get any darker, you discovered this comic book. We are not done with this Power Pack yet, no way, no how. We have to tie up some loose ends with some stories that make you say….”Who OK’ed this?” And first up, is Excalibur #29

Here We Come to Save the Day!!!

Life in a lighthouse is better than no life at all. I expect. You’d have a chance at least. You could sit in there thinking, well, at least I’m not in an apartment. In a minute, somebody’s going to fly a spaceship over head and tell me to come out. (knocks) “Hey you! What’s your team name? Come out of there!”

Did I Pay the Licensing Fee or

I know that one man who wishes he never woke up and dealt with this nonsense, and that is Nightcrawler. He is a simple man, with simple needs. He just wants to live a life of swashbuckling adventure, and not be judged for being a mutant. But instead, he has to deal with shenanigans.

Hey Look, it’s Alex Power

Seriously, look at this insanity, we have the worst asparagus cosplay I have ever seen, riding a horseafied Rachel Summers like a pony. This is just ridiculous in an issue where Alex Power is still a pony. Just saddle up old cloud boy and giddyup.

Let the Bodies Hit the Floor

Then we can talk about the rave that Excalibur goes to. Worst. Dub-step. Ever. I mean, they were not even trying to be creative with the beats. It is called rhythm and bass. If you are just going to keep a one note pedal beat over Ring My Bell, you are gonna lose the audience.

Heads They Win, Tails We Lose

And this only leads to someone losing their head.

Hey Look, It’s Alex Power

At least Alex and Nightcrawler got some moments to chill and reconnect after not seeing or talking to each other since the one time Power Pack was kidnapped and their minds were altered. Good times….yup…..awesome…..so…..you know any good gyms?

  1. So…. ok.

With a more consistent artist, this version of horse Alex would be adorable, and I could dig this more than tall buff stallion Alex. That is not what we had here. Sigh.

From my memories of Excalibur, Rachel being used against the team happens all the time. So amazingly, I didn’t even blink twice when it happened, which means, Higgins got that right? Wow!

In a different dusty memory, the issue of Classic X-Men which reprinted Uncanny #101 included a bonus page showing that Jean’s Phoenix-amped telekinesis would allow her to completely change clothing, explaining how she created her green Phoenix costume. Why? Because Prof X said so. So you know it HAS to be true.

Nothing disturbing about Nightmare sitting on horse-faced Rachel’s back. Nope not at all. Siiiigh.

Stupid sexy Excalibur breakfast scene. I just … the girls walking around in panties? The guys swinging in the breeze? Lockheed working on tanning those hard-to-reach areas? All I got is, it’s European, people. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

And hey, a cryptic ending! The icing on the sexy pajama cake! Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

Oh but it was available on Marvel Unlimited, so of course I read it because you know, Power Pack solidarity. S-i-to-the-infinity-gh.

Hang in there, Pack-Men! To quote Red Leader, “Almost …. there….”

    1. This chibi version of Horse Alex could be adorable…but it’s not. I prefer the original flavor of buff Horse Alex to this, but I do see how it could be an endearing take of the character in the hands of a better artist.

Higgins actually got many things right, just not in a fashion that most people wanted. So him using a used Rachel correctly does not surprise me all that much.

I am starting that Professor X might not be the best authority on how clothes are made, change my mind. WAIT!! Professor X just got in touch with me mentally and he did change my mind…forcefully. Now I think that he is the the best authority on how clothes are made.

It’s a European thing is the best piece of logic that I have yet heard to explain this kitchen scene…it is now cannon. Good job solving this mystery, Tim!

Thanks for the solidarity and for listening in to the rough section of Power Pack. Hope you got some joy out of it. Till next time.

  2. Hey there!

So, I have a couple of points about the artwork on this issue which is admittedly off putting. I think Wozniak was trying to ape the style of Alan Davis who had left the book a few months prior. This book always seemed pretty rudderless without Alan or Chris Claremont. Davis has this niche of dressing or posing the cast in certain ways where its very attractive, may even be sexy, but not dirty. It’s a delicate line that very few illustrators can do. The infamous final image of Excalibur in the kitchen would probably been so different from Davis’ pencil.

What can you say about Mike Higgins but that he’s consistent in couching Fantastic Four stories into other books? Fortunately for the listener as well as our humble hosts, there are rays of sunshine piercing this 90’s cloud of extreme.

    Have a good day guys!

    1. Interesting, I am not familiar enough with Excalibur to know that bit of trivia. Makes sense though. Maintaining a feeling of continuity is an important thing. Still poorly done aping is a big jar to the senses. I now want to see other artists take on the kitchen scene.

I think that Higgins has the same problem that I do with Power Pack, I relate everything to it. What can I say, people love what they love. Still, man, that guy loves to side load the FF.

Hope you are having a great day and that life is treating you well.

  3. This is, I think, the first time Rachel and the present day Franklin have met. In Rachel’s time they were a couple and some stories have gone further (their child in one future is one of the most powerful and forgotten Fantastic Four villains).

And the story completely ignores that history.
