Spider-Man/Power Pack: Runaway

You can listen to the episode by clicking: Episode 66.

Beer and Cover

We are going to start with a trigger warning on this issue. This deals with family issues, child abuse, and runaways. We understand if these are upsetting topics and you want to skip this episode.

That said, we need to say a big thank you to our friend Alexander, aka Waffles (@wafflesthemagic). He joins us all the way from New Zealand to help us review the good half of this free comic book from 1986.

Chillin’ at Home

Because this episode deals with more serious content, this will be a more subdued post about the issue. In fact, I think we will post some information that we talk about during the episode.

Runaway

How to report sexual child abuse:

It is a crime no matter how young the victim or who the offender is. There is an agency in every state that is mandated by state law to receive and investigate reports.

Jane

Treatment for sexual abuse:

Sexual abusers and their families can be helped.  Parents United is one national self-help organization. https://www.nsvrc.org/find-help

Rock, Paper, Candy

Help if you’ve been sexually abused:

The low self esteem, anger and guilt often experienced by victims can lead to a variety of problems later.  Discussion and therapy groups are often helpful. There are local organizations to help survivors. https://www.rainn.org/national-resources-sexual-assault-survivors-and-their-loved-ones

Alley

The number one thing we cannot repeat enough, if you are a survivor of child abuse, it is not your fault. There are trained, professional people who are around to help you. Never be afraid to reach out if you need to.

  1. I never read this issue, but its ad was everywhere, so if I’d seen it anywhere, I would have picked it up. Whew! Not an easy happy-fun-time story. But not surprised that Weezie and June did a darn good job handling the topic.

Waffles was a great guest for the show. Although with his accent, I was starting to expect mentions of the Doom Patrol any moment. Yes, I know New Zealand and Australia are completely different, but you don’t fool me, I know they aren’t real. Like Narnia, Neverland, and Des Moines.

    Great show, my Pack-Men.

    1. I also had never read this issue prior to getting introduced to it for the review. Chalk it up to one more life event had I not been part of this show. Glad that Weezie and June were the creatives on this, as they knew how to do it right.

Waffles was not only a great guest, but he is a great person as well. To be honest, we had been sitting on this review for quite awhile and his involvement with it is what really put the fire to our irons and got us to finally cover it and release it. With out involving him, it would still be a script in the “gotta get to it” pile.

Doom Patrol is filmed in Australia? Huh, learn something new everyday. You are right about one thing though, New Zealand is a fantasy land and doesn’t exist…and I should know, I have visited it before. Figure that one out. 🙂

      Be well my friend.
