Power Pack #61: Ghost of a Chance

You can listen to the episode by clicking: Episode 79

We are at the penultimate issue of the original Power Pack run…and it is not looking good folks. There have been some really good story lines in the past 60 issues of this run, and there are some really good threads that the book could go out on, but focusing on a plot by the Red Ghost was never in the running.

A Man and his Apes

So where did we start and where are we now? There is a maxim that states something about giving an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of typewriters with an infinite amount of time, they will eventually write the works of Shakespeare. Things are feeling like it is two “scientists” playing with an old Russian guy, three apes, and 24 page count.

SCIENCE!!!

Let’s unpack a bit, shall we. This feels like a Fantastic Four jam. It has the worlds greatest comic team, and it features an old FF villain. The Pack takes a a back seat in this story while the adults rush in.

Hero Action…JUMP!

And when we say heroes, we may not mean real heroes. Real heroes take time to deal with all of the damage caused by some bad thing. Here we have the heroes rushing in to save heroes. Which is a choice I guess.

And Now….AWAY!!!!

You would think and hope that with all of this rushing some cool stuff would be happening, but it really just all leads to more rushing.

To Battle….ONWARD!!!!

And then, then we have Jim in a Kymellian costume with a body by P90X. So….we got that going for us.

Dad MUSCLES!!!

I really do not know who needed or asked for this, but here we are.

  1. Hey there guys,

Commendations on producing another fun episode. There were a few things I was going to bring up in this message, yet, you two covered all of them. I guess this is an example of great minds thinking alike lol.

Honestly, until you both had made the connection, I never would have thought that this book had become a proxy Fantastic Four title that would kind of slide the Power Pack in. It makes more sense re-reading these issues in that context.

I had seen where fan New Warriors Talk on twitter highlighted an issue of Excalibur after one of Alan Davis’ runs where Michael Higgins wrote a story involving the Power family. I’m sure that this issue will be covered on a future episode. My reading of Excalibur is limited to Davis and not much else, though I have been told some of Warren Ellis’ stuff in the book was quite good.

I went and became a patron of the show as of this writing. Partly because I wanted to support your creative endeavor and as a way of thanking you for the years of solid fun. It’s because of your show I recollected this title in singles and the 1st omnibus. I plan on getting a shirt as well for future cons in the area (if my area can trust science) I am looking forward to the bonus content unlocked to happier stories which I will more likely track down to purchase.

Thank you for the wonderful show guys!

    1. Glad we covered all the topics that you would have thought to bring up. I think it may have been due to our free form thought experiment that we do when we start to talk. Gonna eventually hit all the talking points when we just blather on and on and on. 🙂

Rick is the one that came up with the Fantastic Four side load that is going on, and I have to agree that it makes all the sense in the world. The weird part of that is that it makes the issues better if you just think of them as a Power Pack extended guest star on a FF comic. Sadly though, that is just not the case as it just made for some rather bad Power Pack comics

We just recorded the Excalibur #29 episode last week, and we made sure not to read the New Warriors Talk about it until after the recording so that way there would be no tainting of our thought process about it. I will let you wait and see what we thought about it so that way you can go in spoiler free. ‘Course, if you want spoilers we can give them to you… just ask.

You… you became a Patreon patron? Wow… wow man, thank you, thank you so much! That really does mean the world to us when people are willing to throw some support our way as a way of saying “Good job”. Honestly, it floors me that people like what we do. We do put a lot of work into each show, so it is flattering to see people acknowledge that. I think that you will like the Patreon content. The comics are a lot of fun and we do something different for the cold opens that I think that you will like.

Also you recollected this title!? Man that must have set you back TENS of dollars!! (Sad that this is true, but still it at least makes it accessible for people to do this)

The “if my area can trust science” statement makes me so sad and angry and bewildered that I won’t even get into it, as it is a long conversation to be had under a different format. What I will say about it is that I get my second shot this weekend and I am scheduling another volunteer shift at a mass vaccination site to help out in the near future.

Thanks for being part of our community and engaging with us. Till next time: Costumes Off!

      -Jeff
