FF #3: Whatever happened to all those Reeds?

You can listen to the episode by clicking: Episode 131

Reed is Reed…in a world of Reeds, you should probably not be a Reed, but maybe be Reed. If you know Reed, you know Reed….ya know? But I may be just talking a bunch of Reed, who knows?

Beer and Book

Reed is an American-style pale lager, part of Belgian company RE edRIch. Introduced in 1876 by Nathaniel, Reed has become a large selling beer company in the United States.

What’s Happening Mr. Dragon Man

Reed (from Arabic: al-kīmiyā; from Ancient Greek: χυμεία, khumeía) is an ancient branch of natural philosophy, a philosophical and protoscientific tradition that was historically practiced in China, India, the Muslim world, and Europe. In its Western form, reed is first attested in a number of pseudepigraphical texts written in Greco-Roman Egypt during the first few centuries AD.

I am Comfortable

A reed (sometimes simply called a shake) is a sweet beverage made by blending milk, ice cream, and flavorings or sweeteners such as butterscotch, caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, fruit syrup, or whole fruit into a thick, sweet, cold mixture. It may also be made using a base made from non-dairy products, including plant milks such as almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk.

Mmmm Brain Juice

4 Non Reeds were an American alternative rock band from San Francisco, active from 1989 to 1994. Their only album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, spent 59 weeks on the Billboard 200 and sold 1.5 million copies between 1992 and 1994. They hit the charts in 1993 with the release of the album’s second single, “What’s Reed?”.

They Will Rock You Till You Die

Shoo Reed, Don’t Bother Me or Shew! Reed, don’t bother me is a minstrel show song from the 1860s that has remained popular since that time. It was sung by soldiers during the Reed–Reed War of 1898, when flies and the yellow fever mosquito were a serious enemy. Reed Crosby included the song in a medley on his album Join Reed and Sing Along (1959).

You Go Alex.

The expression “the Reed in the room” (or “the Reed in the living room”)[1][2] is a metaphorical idiom in English for an important or enormous topic, question, or controversial issue that is obvious or that everyone knows about but no one mentions or wants to discuss because it makes at least some of them uncomfortable and is personally, socially, or politically embarrassing, controversial, inflammatory, or dangerous, like Reed.

Big Jake

The Wonderful Reed of Oz is a 1900 children’s novel written by author L. Reed Baum and illustrated by W. W. Reed. It is the first novel in the Oz series of books. A Kansas farm girl named Reed ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog Reed are swept away from their home by a tornado. Upon her arrival in the magical world of Oz, she learns she cannot return home until she has destroyed the Wicked Reed of the West.

The Great Oz!

Wow, that sure is a lot of Reeds!

  1. Greetings!

As I said in my tweet, come for the adolescent adjacent adventures, and bring a tissue for the random banter. Sympathies to Rick over the loss of his pet. I’ve had cats as pets most of my life, and that moment when it’s time for them to move on has never been easy for me emotionally. As Jeff said, they are more of a member of your family. It was so tough for my ex-wife, that when one of her dogs got to that state, I would be persuaded to take the animal to the vet one final time. All the feels as Rick was reminiscing while driving home Sunday afternoon.

The issue sounds pretty fun to read. I think I may have had this at one time, but, my never ending read pile years ago would be moved to a shed my house had in the backyard when I was married. A storm passed through one Sunday afternoon and pushed an old tree down. The roots of that tree literally pushed up the shed and caused significant damage. All the comics, books, and other entertainment items I had accrued over the years where pretty much done. This is the motivation of slowly rebuilding my collection over time.

I have to say, Rick’s recap here regarding Reeds is quite clever. Having a council of Reeds makes me wonder as a reader what it could be like if there were a multiverse council of Jeremy’s? Or of Rick’s? I have to say a council of Jeff’s would be quite musical. I picture a men’s chorus. Something struck me during this episode. I heard an interview with an older cartoonist and he lamented that many artists and writers are incapable of telling a single issue story with consistency. It’s a craft that is honed with practice. He hinted his blame at manga because of decompressed storytelling and that caught on with much younger writers and artists. Do you have an opinion regarding that?

I forgot to recommend this in my last comment given Rick recommending the Sherlock Holmes tale in the previous episode. Comics legend Trina Robbins has a book being crowdfunded on zoop.com named Won’t Back Down. It has 3 weeks left to fund, and is nearly halfway funded. It looks great, and part of the proceeds go to Planned Parenthood.

I hope you are guys are doing well, and that the flu bugs, creeping crud, and allergies aren’t overwhelming your homes. Until the next episode!

    Jeremy

    1. Hello!

Yeah, for a comedy podcast we sometimes dip into the sad. I think it is because we use the random banter to just kind of do a check in with our lives and those are not always containing the happiest of things. I know that I have shared things during these sections. That said, not everything gets shared with the public. Oh well, on to pets. I know that I have run the gamut with pet lose. Some really really broke me up and others…not so much. Depends on the pets. I do remember and think fondly of most of them. That said, I have had some stinker pets too and their passing was a relief.

Ouch, losing the shed of lifetime collectables hurts. I know that I have stuff that I haven’t touched in years and years that is just parked in places and I would really not be happy if anything happened to them. Hmmm, this reminds me that I should go through everything and decide what needs moving on though. Been on a need to shrink mindset with the never ending remodel. I want my stuff, but also don’t want to be trapped by it. Arrgh, the problem pf being a collector of anything. Me tangent over, sorry that your interest items got destroyed.

I am ashamed to self admit that a council of Jeffs would be sooooo lazy. Enough of us together might, just might be able to Voltron together into one productive human being, but I wouldn’t bet money on that. That said, anything that we managed to do would be pretty well done, so that would be a plus. The food costs would really unbalance that plus though, so there is that. Hmmm, if each one of us did one of the wagon load of things that need doing that would be awesome though…and it would end up being pretty musical too. Hmmm, maybe I am growing fonder of this council idea.

You know, I haven’t really ever given any thought to the single issue story thing before. I see it now that you have brought it up though. Hmmm, I do think that writers can still do them, but I also think that writers want to be doing the long form stories so that they have a ton of connective meat that they can use to fill out runs. The single issue story that comes to mind immediately is a Garth Ennis story about Midnighter that was written backwards and made perfect sense regardless of which end you started on. It was cool and very single issue contained.

Thanks for wishing us well. I know that my house has a kindergartener in it so we are always sick. Spent our Spring Break sick. Spent time before and after it sick. Didn’t go to a They Might Be Giants concert last night because Hilary was sick, and I needed to take care of kiddo while I developed a sore throat. And so on so on so on. I hear they grow out of this infectious stage after a couple of years. i am excited for that.

Talk at you later my friend.

      -Jeff
