Amazing Spider-Man #661: The Substitute Part One

You can listen to the episode by clicking: Episode 129

Class…class….it is time for you all to pay attention. Now, I know you all were expecting Rick to be writing this post relating to this comic book…podcast…thing, but he could not be bothered to do that. So, I am here in his place.

Beer and Book

According to these notes, you were supposed to be discussing how to engage in battle. I would be shocked to discover that you were all this advanced. Doubt that you have the knowledge or experience to deal with this much sophistication, but I will try to impart some knowledge to you.

Droppin In

Dress for the occasion. Do not be some down on their luck, nobody who thinks a paper bag on their head is an acceptable look. Be serious. Be bold. And do not break any trademark laws.

My Eyes

The most important factor in engagement is to look your opening in the eyes. You must know what they are, where there intentions lie, if they are wearing glasses. That is more important than anything else. Hitting some one with glasses on is illegal in many counties, and the fines are very prohibitive.

Science My Fist

If you plan on getting physical with your opponent, be sure that you do so in a civilized and proper manner. Introductions may seem passe, but they are required. You need to follow the rules of form and etiquette or we will all end up like animals.

Cheap Shot

Some educated “scholars” would have you believe that a fallen foe should be treated with respect. You should not do this. Once you have them subdued, take the opportunity to really put them in their place with a stern word and a heavy glance. A well placed jibe would be acceptable in these situations.

Psycho Man

We should cover names and how you address yourselves. According to your normal teacher’s notes, you have been instructed to be subdued in your approach to identifying yourself. This is incorrect. Your name is your calling card, your shield. Make it a weapon to control your enemies.

Take out the Trash

Speaking of enemies, know that your friends are temporary and should be treated as such. Use them only as far as you can trust them. They will probably turn on you so you should not trust them. At least with villains, you know where they stand.

Friends

And this is the end of class. I would like a 12 page essay from each of you detailing the best ways to remove blood stains and bribe officials. We have a lot of work to make you true heroes.

We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. We have a couple of nifty shirts for sale. https://www.redbubble.com/people/jeffrickpresent/?asc=u

  1. Hello friends! It’s mid-March when typing this and my area got hit with some cold air again. Things are not as bad as it is in your area to be sure, but, trees had began to bud and lawns are coming to life, and got hit with a freeze.

What an interesting spot the show has arrived at for episode 129. Spider-Man substitute teacher! At least he isn’t filling in at that high school I saw in the grimy 80s trashtasic picture Class of 1984! That place will leave a mark lol. I think it may still be playing on tubi if you have not watched it, and with tubi being a free service, that makes it all the better.

Now, I may be a glutton for punishment, but it’s a shame that a Spider title couldn’t have fit in a couple of panels showcasing Alex Power teaching a class! I am sure it would have been over my philistine head, but still, don’t give this reader that egghead set-up and then drop it lol. The little hints of higher education for the Power siblings gets me excited. They’re going places if their mouse overlord would let them out. (my subtle hint that the miniseries done by Louise and June needs to see the light of day now)

The cover to this issue made me immediately think of the Justice League Europe cover to issue 6. An infamous issue where the league has been tasked to go to night school and learn French since their embassy is in Paris. Everyone is in street clothes for this adventure, along with the villainous bunch Injustice Gang. Hilarity indeed ensues!!

I had a small thought; You began the episode with a Honda ad. It is strange to think of what advertisers use comic book titles these days. As a kid, there were ads for grit and tang and now there’s ads for cars. So strange!

I’m glad Jeff was feeling better during the recording. My brother is a huge fan of Last of Us both the game and miniseries. He had told me the high wire act done by the show where there’s fidelity to the game, but enough expansion to tv drama.

I remember that Peter was a teacher at a college sometime before this story. Isn’t it weird when you have talent try to fit the character with grown up jobs like scientist or teacher, only to go back to square one. All the trappings of adulthood except wedded bliss and kids, because readers can’t relate to that. Okay!

Once again, your fine show has me looking at buying books I didn’t have to read along if I get time to listen again to the episode. The folks at mycomicshop.com should kick some change your way. As always your show is a delight and highlight of my Sunday when I get that email notice.

    Onwards and upwards guys!

    1. Hi Jeremy!

Yeah, it’s been a weird season weather wise, hasn’t it? I think that we are past having freezes and snows now, as it was tee-shirt weather here for the past couple of days. That said, my phone says it might snow again in a few days so who knows? I am looking forward to the nice weather but am not looking forward to the yardwork that will come along with it. too many things to do, really don’t want more chores on my plate.

I have vague half formed memories of the Class of 1984, so I had to look it up. That was quite the pull you did there, and I am proud of you for it. I don’t remember school being quite as rough as portrayed in the trailer that I watched, but then again, my high school wasn’t populated by a bunch of students who were in their late twenties and early to mid-thirties. It is understandable why they were so angry as they really just needed to be pushed out of the public school system at that point.

It would be cool to see Alex teach a class, but I think that it would also be pretty dry for what he was covering in this issue. Now Alex was starting to talk about Everett’s universal wave function theory, and what is funny about this…other than the fact that it nets you a private Science Corner…is that it “informs a core concept in the relative state interpretation or many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics”. Now what does this mean? Why, it is the invention of branching realities. Yup, Everett was the father of the Multiverse. Fun little real world science theory pull that Christos Gage did here, especially since Hickman is setting up something dealing with this exact theory.

Never really read Justice League, but the concept of that issue sounds amazing! Might just have to track it down for the hilarity.

Yeah, I kinda get that the companies understand that adults read comics too, but it still seems weird. Maybe they are trying to get brand recognition ingrained in the youths? I don’t know.

At some point I will see the Last of Us show. I am sure that it won’t be anytime soon, but it will happen. Too many streaming services and media things to keep up with.

Douglas Wolk really opened my eyes to the cyclical nature of Peter Parker. Hadn’t really thought about it in that nature other than to recognize the soft reboots that occurred over the years with him that I just chalked up to the decades of stories needing to get tidied up.

Glad you enjoy what we do, and to be called a highlight of a Sunday? Wow, that is high praise indeed. Thank you.

Well, time for me to bid you adieu. Until next time!

      -Jeff
