Avengers Academy #26: Career Day

You can listen to the episode by clicking: Episode 151

Let’s talk about a book full of talking. It is a talking book and we are talking people. So, what are we going to talk about here? I don’t know. Probably something to do with the pictures we are showing which will make no sense if you are looking at this text on the episode.

Book and Beer

Why would you pull someone’s hair like Quicksilver does. It is rude and annoying and he should be slapped for doing it. What an absolute punk. I do not care that he was potentially saving Avengers IP from being taken. It is still not very nice.

Hair Puller

Hank Pym has been many things in his life, but we do not talk much about him being a librarian. It is true. One time, between appearances, he became a librarian in a small New England fishing town. He just needed a break and so he got away and somehow snagged this quiet little job. Nobody talks about it. Probably because I made it up.

The Librarian

We all know that gossip is the worst kind of talking. Well, not the worst. The worst is what Jennifer said about Randal after PE. That was horrible…and so mean. I mean, I know that Randal had broken up with Jennifer so he could go out with Tina, but that Tina was still in love with Calvin. Oh the drama.

Drama

I like dino butts, and I cannot lie, some other brothers think they are fly….ok…I have nothing.

Shake It

What type of a bath do you like? I am more of a shower man myself. In and out after a good scrub. Some people really like to just sit in water heavy with salt and flowery smells. Apparently it is soothing. For me, it makes me thing of sitting in the ocean waiting to be attacked by a shark wearing perfume.

Bath Time

The evil plans of one man can make the world shake. Just look at the evil wrought by Tom in accounting. He went home early for lunch and did not close the Anderson account properly, and that was the doom of the entire company. Rue…RUE the day!

Evil Plans

This man is a big unit.

Big Unit

I hope that was confusing and pointless. That was my goal.

  1. Hi again!

I have already read all the issues of the Avengers Academy series, so I can say confidently that I like Gage’s style, as well as I also like Hickman’s, despite their clear differences. I would say that Gage focuses more on the characters and their relationships, while Hickman pays more attention to the plot.

Talking about this issue specifically, I found very funny the pep talk by Hank Pym, especially when he says: “Seen and done things no other scientist can even imagine”. Like, really? Not even Reed? Or Tony? Or Sue?

Anyway, I find it interesting that, even if they are not very easy to find in general, the Power Pack members have been brought to their comics by some great writers (in my opinion). For example, these two, North, Whitley, and, of course, Simonson.

Concerning the author of this issue, have you considered interviewing him? In the letter page of issue #15, when asked if the powers of Leech only affect mutants, he said “I believe I remember him doing it to the kids in Power Pack, and they’re not mutants”. Therefore, it seems that he read the original series when he was a child (or, at least, younger).

I hope you continue doing great programs, as always.

    Best regards,

    Pablo

    1. Hi Pablo!

This this this! I fully agree with you that Gage focuses more on the characters and their relationships, while Hickman pays more attention to the plot. I love Hickman’s work. I have read many things that he has written, but not all his characters really have character. He is amazing for telling a grand sweeping story. I am not sure if I have read anything from Gage before. But now I want to…the man can write, and his characters feel like individuals.

Or Beast. Or Banner. Or…the list goes on. Heck, even James Power has had some interesting life occurrences. Still, Hank was waxing poetic, and you can’t do that very well if you stop to add a bunch of addendums on. That, and the fact that I think that Hank is probably a little full of himself and he might fully believe it.

Yup, the Pack are little rare gems that seem to only get picked up by some respectable talents. I want them to be well known and widespread, but it is nice to be part of the indy crowd that knew them before they were cool…at least I like to tell myself that instead of being sad that they are hard to find.

We are behind on our interview game. Got lots of folk that would be cool to talk to that we either haven’t approached yet or haven’t been able to get in contact with. For semi public figures, some of them are darn right impossible to get in touch with.

I hope we continue doing great programs as well. 🙂 Also, thank you for saying so, it is a kindness we appreciate.

      Till next time.

  2. While this was indeed a talky issue, somehow I barely noticed? And I get pretty exhausted by lots of text in my comics normally. All I can figure is I was enjoying the ride and it flowed well. But maybe not look too closely inside Tim’s head. Ew.

I do have additional thoughts on Future Hank. First, his helmet is all the things you guys mention, especially looking like pieces of Jocasta’s head. (Creepy! Why do you have part of J’s head, Hank!) I also see it resembling a short-lived change to his Giant-Man costume. Check out the cover of Tales to Astonish #65:

Second, I was annoyed that Reptil coming back to the past made no sense. Until this issue, where Future Hank says “Now you’ll reach the same point, but less people have to die to get there.” So the time travel *saved* lives! It still might not make sense, but if that result actually happened, I’m good with it. No further questions!

Excellent listening as always! Happy New Year, my Pack-Brothers!

    1. The dialogue blocks were interesting, and they spruced them up with the potential threat of imminent violence. They tricked us into reading by teasing punching. Gage you crafty writer you. As for looking inside your head, I try not to crack open people’s skulls too often, as I have gotten scolded about that before in the past…but if you insist, I’ll go get my hammer. 🙂 JK The text blocks were plentiful, but not page crowding like I have seen in some other titles.

Clicks link….wow, that was a look. I can kinda see the Wasp influences that they were going for, but boy howdy, I am glad that is a look that didn’t last. Not sure I have ever seen it before, so….thanks?

Tie travel story’s tend to leave me a little so so. Mostly because you can do whatever you want and then safely reset the time line effectively making the whole arc one long What If?

Glad we have your ears Tim, and glad you are enjoying. Until next time, my brother in Pack…Customer on! (Is that it, I forget)
